Western Canada's premier Muay Thai fighting event returned as Journey Fight Series presented "Muay Thai Journey Fight Series VII" featuring an 8-bout card and the continuation of an 8-man 160 lb tournament in the main event, at the Century Casino in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
In the main event, "Shotgun" Sean McKinnon (32-4) defeated Rhys Jones (16-1) via TKO in the fifth round. This sets up the semifinals in which McKinnon will face Preston Baptiste and in the other bracket Shane Campbell will battle Troy Sheridan later this year. McKinnon was able to land multiple over hand rights that found their mark on Jones' chin. Both fighters landed a series of nice leg kicks but McKinnon got the better of the exchanges with the fists landing a solid jab to complement his over hand rights. McKinnon really started to put together great combos in round four where he landed a left jab, followed up by a right high kick and even a short elbow. As the fight grew longer, McKinnon grew stronger and more accurate. In the fifth round McKinnon ended Jones' night with a series of strikes including a high roundhouse kick, a chopping low kick and a couple punches to the body that doubled over Jones. It was an impressive victory for McKinnon and he will make some noise in the Final Four of the tourney. The co-main event, Lindsay Ball (18-2) defeated Jessica Gladstone (21-13) via split decision in a razor close fight that saw both women push the other to the extreme in a five round slugfest. Ball came out the winner in part because of her constant ability to throw punches in bunches. She landed looping overhand rights that found their mark more often than not as well as disrupted Gladstone's attacks with push kicks. It was a fight that could have gone either way as Gladstone was the more technical striker and landed solid strikes in her own right including low kicks, punches and jabs and seemed to be the fresher of the two fighters heading into the final round. But Ball's ability to control most rounds with her push kicks and keep Gladstone at a distance was probably what sealed the deal. Watch the journey of one fighter as he becomes champion! Don't miss this loaded event with 8 high octane bouts including the quarterfinals of the 160 lb tournament, as Journey Fight Series presents "Muay Thai Journey Fight Series VII" exclusively on VOD at GFL.tv. |
