Debuting on the GFL Combat Sports Network, COMBAT 8 presented its new form of combat sport with "MMA VS Boxing" as the Australian promotion looked to take the best of both boxing and MMA and combine it into one, new, hybrid style of fighting. COMBAT 8 was founded in Australia's Steel City (Newcastle) and has spent over two years developing a style of combat that could stand as a platform in the middle to bring both boxers and mixed martial artists together with a rules system in place that equally assists both sportsmen. The COMBAT 8 style uses 3 x 3 minute rounds leaving a competitor no time to waste in the square cage.
The fighters only get 30 seconds per round on the ground before they are forced to stand up. There is no kicking, knees or elbows as COMBAT 8 wants to have more of a hand to hand competition with punches, slams, armbars and chokes. Dirty Boxing is allowed.
In the main event, Justin Murray defeated Les "Diamond" Piper via armbar after just 63 seconds of action. Both men squared off against each other with Piper throwing punches in a flurry. Murray side-stepped most of the strikes and scooped Piper up for a big slam. Murray then pushed Piper against the cage and landed several strikes from the mount before transitioning to the fight ending submission. Although the fight only lasted for just over a minute, both Murray and Piper gave the fans their monies worth in this battle.
"MMA VS Boxing" was full of knockouts and submissions, exactly what the type of show COMBAT 8 was looking to produce. Some fights resembled boxing while others like the main event had striking and grappling. If you're a fan of boxing, MMA, dirty boxing or cage fighting, then this is the event for you. These warriors went mano y mano and showed that COMBAT 8 is here to stay. Order now at GFL.tv.
