Warriors Cup XVII
Weapons 9 Promotions returned to GFL and delivered another dose of top ranked pro/am Muay Thai to the Tri-State area at Shuetzen Park in North Bergen, New Jersey with Warriors Cup XVII featuring 13 fights. Warriors Cup events have quickly carved out a popular niche for themselves on the Eastern seaboard as the place to see great standup fighting. Warriors Cup XVII might have been the best one yet as there was plenty of punches, kicks, knees and more!
In the main event, former Bellator Champion Lyman Good (Tiger Schulmann) defeated kickboxing sensation Strahinja Ivanovic (Capital MMA) after five rounds via unanimous decision. Good is known for his all-around fighting as he has shown a great arsenal of wrestling, grappling and striking in his MMA career where he has amassed a record of (15-3) and he did enough in this bout to win 4 rounds on all three judges' scorecards. Good looked like a much bigger fighter in the ring and his power was evident in the early going where he had Ivanovic backing up and looking to counter. Good landed some nice punches throughout the fight as he really sat down on his feet so he could unload with his fists, but maybe most telling was his grappling and advantage in the clinch as anytime Ivanovic would try to land knees from the position or found distance with his punches or kicks, Good would close the space and grab Ivanovic as well as toss him to the mat from the position on several occasions. After five rounds it was clear that Good was just a better all-around athlete and whatever he lacked in experience he made up with in athleticism and being a quick study as he was able to shut down a very dangerous fighter in Ivanovic.
In other action, with the 138 lb Title on the line, Laurel Holloway (Sitan Gym) defeated Christina "X" Peteraf (Cool Hearts Muay Thai Camp) by unanimous decision after 5 rounds of championship action. Both women fought extremely hard as there was no question they had put the time in the gym as their cardio was tremendous. Both ladies connected with knees, leg kicks and punches but Holloway was a bit more accurate in the eyes of the judges and scored the win. This was a close fight and there wasn't a dull moment in the fight.
