Showdown Fights, the top MMA organization in Utah, provided another night of exciting fights as it presented "Burkman VS Yager", to a packed crowd at the UCCU Events Center in Orem, Utah. The 9-bout card featured 8 stoppages including in the main event and a fight of the night that shocked the crowd. Utah MMA has flown under the radar for over a decade, but after watching this event, it will be hard to ignore the "Beehive State".
In the main event, UFC veteran Josh "The Peoples Warrior" Burkman (23-9) out of Salt Lake City, Utah defeated UFC veteran Jamie Yager (6-3) via choke in round two in a welterweight contest. Round one was mostly a feeling out process as Burkman had to figure out how to deal with Yager's size advantage while Yager was looking to cut off the ring of the nimble Burkman. Both fighters traded leg kicks and Yager got a takedown and then after a quick scramble as both men got back to their feet Burkman had a guillotine choke, but wasn't close to finishing the fight. In round two things heated up as Yager went in for another takedown but Burkman stuffed it and caught Yager in another guillotine where he also landed a knee to the check of Yager. The fighters broke free and again squared up with each other. In almost a mirror image of the series before Yager shot in again with Burkman stuffing the takedown and grabbing a choke. The two scrambled a bit more in lockup and Burkman found himself with a tight guillotine as he was on his back. Burkman wrapped his leg around Yager's torso for more leverage and Yager was forced to tapout in a great main event fight. In the fight of the night, Justin Buchholz (13-7) came back from the brink of defeat to submit Clay Collard (9-4) with a guillotine in round three. Collard controlled most of the first two rounds landing hard shots on Buchholz including several bone rattling elbows. Collard had connected with elbows all night but in round two Buckholz let Collard up from a close choke attempt and landed a pair himself, but Collard came back with a front kick that landed square dropping Buckholz and stopping his attack. It looked like the fight was over when Collard followed up a fallen Buckholz to the mat and landed punch after punch opening up a large cut on Buchholz. But through it all Buckholz did just enough to fight back keeping the ref from stopping the fight. In round three, Collard was clearly the crisper puncher beating Buckholz to the point of attack almost every time, but a huge left high kick by Buckholz connected squarely on Collard changing the flow of the fight. Collard fell to the mat and Buckholz knew this was his chance. He grabbed ahold of a choke and after reapplying the pressure sunk it in deep and got the tapout for the improbable but well deserved win. Showdown Fights is back with "Burkman VS Yager".
