ATLANTIC
CITY, NJ (February 29, 2012)—This past
Saturday night, Welterweight
Ronald Cruz lived up to his top fifteen ranking and remained undefeated
as he
scored a ten round unanimous decision over Allen Conyers in a back and
forth
slugfest in Atlantic City. Conyers
looked good early as he used his length and stuck out the jab that
seemed to
confuse Cruz early.
Cruz rocked and then
sent Conyers down to the canvas at the end of the opening frame. Conyers
was able to regain his composure and
fight well in spots over the rest of the fight. Cruz
, who is normally an orthodox fighter,
fought most of the fight from the southpaw stance. Cruz
would later state that it was something
he saw in the first round that he was able to exploit Conyers. The two
had
many back and forth exchanges with Cruz getting the better of most of
those
flurries.
Cruz landed some solid
combinations with Conyers trying to fire back which thrilled the
capacity crowd
at Ballys in Atlantic City. Cruz got
stronger down the stretch and came home with the most impressive
victory to
date, Cruz, who
was ranked number fifteen by the IBF raises his perfect ledger to 16-0. In the
co-feature, IBF number nine ranked Cruiserweight Garrett Wilson scored
a third
round stoppage over Pedro Martinez in a battle of Philadelphia based
Cruiserweights. Wilson
hurt
Martinez in the second and landed a shot that may have broken the nose
of
Martinez.
Wilson came out and dropped
Martinez in the third.
With his Martinez
nose leaking blood the fight was stopped.
Wilson will now look forward
to a rematch with Andres Taylor on April 14th. In a
battle
of Camden, New Jersey Welterweights, Luis Cream remained undefeated by
dropping
Miguel Corcino on his way to a four round unanimous decision. Rafael
Montalvo scored what many are calling his second straight upset as he
stopped
DeCarlo Perez in round two of their scheduled six round Welterweight
bout. MMA Star
Jeff Lentz made a successful pro debut with a vicious first round
stoppage over
David Navarro. Antowyan
Aikens made it two straight over Charles Kirby as he scored a four
round
unanimous decision in their super middleweight rematch. Aikens
won
twice that evening as he proposed in the middle of the ring to his now
fiancé. In a
second
rematch, Korey Pritchett scored a four round unanimous decision over
Korey
Sloane in a Jr. Welterweight bout. |
