It was an action packed night of boxing at the beautiful Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York as Samuel Miller won the WBC/USNBC Middleweight title with an emphatic eighth round stoppage over previously undefeated Isaac Rodrigues. Miller of Colombia took control early as the hard charging Rodrigues pressed forward but ate big shots that he had no answer for. In round seven, Rodrigues was visibly wobbled for the first time and then in the eighth he caught a hard combination that sent him to the canvas. Rodrigues gamely tried to continue but ate a quick combination and the fight was stopped at 1:48 of round eight. With the win, Miller is now 21-4 with eighteen knockouts and will get a significant ranking by the WBC and that should put him just a few fights away from a world title opportunity. The exciting co-feature was a battle of Lightweights, Brian Miller and Ikem Orji. The bout lived up to the billing as an action packed affair and neither man would take a step back. The fight was fought in the preverbal “phone booth” as Miller tried to press by touching Orji but it was Orji who showed lightning quick hands and would drop Miller in round three with a hard right hook. Miller showed his mettle by regaining his legs and made the fight competitive. In round eight, Orji was docked a point for low blows but quickly made that a moot point by dropping Miller in the last minute of the fight. Miller was able to continue but was rocked just seconds later and the fight was waved off. Orji is now 7-3 with four knockouts while Miller loses for the first time and is 8-1-4. After an absence of over a year, Kenny Abril was very sharp in scoring a six round unanimous decision over Francisco Ginorio. Abril was very effective with crisp punching while moving in and out and keeping out of harm’s way. Scores were 60-54 on two cards while a third card read 59-55 for Abril who is now 10-3-1. Ginorio is now 7-7-2. Cruiserweight Brian Clookey dropped late replacement Zachary Swallen just seconds into the second round and got the stoppage victory in the scheduled four round bout. Clookey is now 3-0 with two knockouts. In an entertaining ladies bout, Jackie Trivilino and Jennifer Scott exchanged heavy shots with the precise Trivilino score more consistent and effective to win a hard fought sox round unanimous decision. For her terrific effort, Trivilino won the prestigious “Oscar Suarez Fighter of the Night” for the second consecutive show at The Turning Stone. Stephen Scott boxed effectively and pounded out a four round unanimous decision over Deferson LeGrabd in a Jr. Middleweight bout. Scott is now 5-1. LeGrand is knocked from the undefeated ranks and is now 3-1. Ilyas Aksabaezv of the Bronx and Jamell Tyson of Rochester fought to a majority draw in the professional debut for both jr. welterweights. |
